HLA has a number of roles currently for volunteers to join its ranks and help move the organisation forward. Outline details are given below. If you are interested in any of the roles, please email us, stating which role, sending a CV and stating why you think you are good for the role. Please note, these are unpaid roles, requiring an ongoing commitment of several hours each week. All roles require a fluent level of written and spoken English. The period of appointment is usually three years. In the case of Trustee roles, trustees normally meet four times a year, via conference call or in London or Oxford.

Chairman & Trustee

  • Liaising with relevant staff, Trustees and/or volunteers to ensure the operational viability of the organisation.
  • Making fellow Trustees aware of their fiduciary/governance obligations.
  • Regularly reviewing the financial position from reports provided by the Treasurer and Fundraising Trustee.
  • Ensuring proper records are kept and that effective governance procedures and controls are in place.
  • Advising Trustees of changes in fundraising legislation and practices.
  • Advising the Trustees on best practice in good governance, compliance and risk management.
  • Arranging c. 4 Board meetings pa, including setting agendas, running the meeting and producing minutes.

Treasurer & Trustee

  • Work with other Trustees in discharging the fiduciary duties of a director and Trustee of the charitable company.
  • Oversee the financial affairs of the HLA and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practices for a charitable company registered in England and Wales.
  • Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation.
  • Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits when required.
  • Oversee the production of an annual budget and proposing its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place.

Fundraising Trustee

  • Increase funds raised from grant-making Trusts and private Foundations active in the humanitarian sector.
  • Demonstrable experience of working on grant applications, community fundraising, communications or social media marketing Trust fundraising experience.
  • Undertake research to identify potential funders and review/analyse existing research.
  • Excellent copywriting skills and ability to communicate jargon-free information in a clear and accessible way.
  • Experience of delivering fundraising campaigns.
  • Project management skills to enable delivery against multiple projects at any one time.
  • Liaise with other volunteers to manage relationships with funders.

Membership Manager

  • Lead on membership and sponsorship management, to ensure the benefits promised are realised, with support from marcomms volunteers, e.g. news stories, social media announcements, involvement in webinars and seminars.
  • Lead on corporate annual renewals process, to increase renewals.
  • Handle membership admin using WordPress CMS and template emails to confirm members and create or activate member accounts.
  • Use WordPress website editor to create member profiles and accompanying news items.

Marketing Communications Assistant

  • Edit, create and issue monthly member e-newsletter.
  • Create and post news and events to the website, as required.
  • Help create leaflets for events/sponsorship purposes.
  • Research, edit and post content for HLA’s Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn company and group pages, Instagram and YouTube accounts, liaising with Social Media Manager.
  • Liaise with SMM to analyse web/SM metrics and make recommendations regarding performance.
  • Help create any Google Adword campaigns, including monitoring/analysis of metrics.
  • Help with planning of webinar and other events. 
  • Help promote events, including copywriting emails and website entries.
  • Help producing slides and other materials for events, including post-event promotion.
