Humanitarian Logistics

The CIHC’s Humanitarian Logistics course examines one of the most important aspects of humanitarian assistance: the movement of necessary goods to those who need them most. The program explores the ways that logistics can affect humanitarian support, and gives participants an opportunity to analyze case studies and development methods for improving delivery of aid.

The CIHC’s Humanitarian Logistics course examines one of the most important aspects of humanitarian assistance: the movement of necessary goods to those who need them most.  The program explores the ways that logistics can affect humanitarian support, and gives participants an opportunity to analyze case studies and development methods for improving delivery of aid.  Topics of discussion include warehouse management, port operations and information flows in and out of disaster affected areas. 

Designed to be flexible enough to accommodate humanitarian aid professionals working in the field, while also remaining academically rigorous, the Humanitarian Logistics course is a 6-day intensive course worth 2 graduate-level academic credits.  It is a required part of the Masters of International Humanitarian Action (MIHA), Module 2, offered by the Center for International Humanitarian Cooperation, or as a stand-alone course. 

The course fee is US$1,600 for those who wish to receive academic credit or US$900 for those who do not wish to receive academic credit.  A limited number of scholarships are available.  To be eligible for a scholarship, you must be a citizen of a developing nation and currently working within the humanitarian field. 

Qualifications:  All participants are required to have a university degree.  Participants must be fluent in English as all courses are conducted in English.  Preference is given to those with more than 5 years of experience.

Since 2001, Charles Muchiri has worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross Red (ICRC) Regional Logistics Centre in his native Nairobi, Kenya. He has worked on various field assignments in Ethiopia and Sudan. After three years as the Warehouse Supervisor, Charles has been promoted to Head of Warehousing.
