Myanmar: Bulletin n.4 - 23 July 2008 (Logistics Cluster)
Highlights:
The airbridge from Bangkok to Yangon will continue with two aircraft until August 10th. The Ilyushin 76 has been flying three rotations a day for the last two days. The goal is to bring as much of the remaining cargo as possible into Myanmar by air before common transport services end.

SITUATION OVERVIEW
1. The Post-Nargis Joint Assessment (PONJA) report was simultaneously released in Singapore and Myanmar today by the Government of the Union of Myanmar (GoUM), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations.

FOREWORD
On 2 and 3 May 2008, Cyclone Nargis struck the coast of Myanmar and moved inland across the Ayeyarwady Delta and southern Yangon Division, causing many deaths, destroying livelihoods, and disrupting economic activities and social conditions. This report describes the human loss and assessment of damage to physical assets, the subsequent losses sustained across all economic activities, and the impact of the disaster on both the national economy and household-level activities and well-being.

The Ilyushin 76 remains grounded due to technical problems. A replacement
has not yet been found. The Antonov 12 continues to fly two rotations per day,
but for the moment the airbridge is functioning at reduced capacity.

Under the leadership of Myanmar Medical Association (Central), medic teams comprising specialists, doctors and volunteer doctors from Mandalay, Shwebo, Taunggyi, Toungoo, Pyay, Mawlamyine and Pathein townships provided medical treatment for 34 times in storm-hit regions from 2 May to the end of June.

Relief aids including 3550 bags of rice, 58 power- tillers by Win Sein boat and 155 rolls of tarpaulin, two water purifiers, 40 packages of rain coat, 9 bottles of edible oil, 40 packages of tarpaulin, nine bags of salt, 11 bags of garlic, 3 bags of onion and household goods totalling 30 tons by Yan Myo Aung boat were transported to Mawlamyinegyun Township yesterday, to be distributed to the storm-affected regions in the township.

Urgent funding needed for WFP helicopters to assist in Myanmar - 20 June 2008

A critical shortage of funds for a helicopter operation providing essential logistical support to nearly 50 aid agencies is threatening the relief effort for 2.4 million survivors of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, the United Nations World Food Programme warned today.

The Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar on 2 and 3 May 2008, making landfall in Ayeyarwady Division crossing through the Irrawaddy delta from southwest to northeast, and directly hitting the country's largest city, Yangon. Major damage was reported in the affected areas, particularly in the low-lying agricultural delta region where the Cyclone's impact was compounded by a storm surge.

The ASEAN Secretariat received a US$850,000-grant from World Bank today for disaster assessment and recovery activities in cyclone-hit Myanmar. Dr Soeung Rathchavy, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN Secretariat and Mr Joachim von Amsberg, Country Director for Indonesia, World Bank signed the grant agreement this afternoon.
CARE begins planning for early recovery phase in Myanmar - 17 June 2008

WHO releases first disease surveillance reports in Myanmar - 16 June 1008

The World Health Organization and Health Cluster partners have released the first disease surveillance bulletin in cyclone affected areas based on the Early Warning, Alert and Response System (EWARS). Between 1-7 June, 685 cases of acute respiratory infections, 117 cases of bloody diarrhoea, 542 cases of acute diarrhoea, 337 cases of trauma/injuries, 10 cases of measles, 5 cases of malaria and three cases of suspected dengue hemorrhagic fever were reported.
