The earthquake hit at around 5pm local time. Its epicentre was just outside the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and it measured 7.0 on the Richter Scale. An earthquake of this magnitude has not been felt in Haiti for about 200 years. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere with over half the population below the poverty line. An estimated three million people have been affected, with many left homeless and forced to live in squalid conditions. Initial estimates of casualties run into the thousands. Urgent needs are likely to include shelter, water and sanitation, and health. Emergency response is core to our work at Save the Children. Getting the urgently needed supplies in country and out to the affected populations as soon as possible is crucial to our response if we are going to prevent further lose of life and provide relief to those left homeless and injured. Can you help? Save the Children is looking to recruit a Global Supply Chain Manager to help us develop and implement supply strategies worldwide to meet the needs of vulnerable children around the world. Based in our London headquarters the Global Supply Chain Manager will work closely with our Global Programmes as well as our emergency response teams to identify the supply needs and liaise with suppliers and other international humanitarian organisations to find worldwide solutions.
